This book aims at gauging whether the nature of US foreign policy decision-making has changed after the Cold War as radically as a large body of literature seems to suggest, and develops a new framework to interpret presidential decision-making in foreign policy. It locates the study of risk in US foreign policy in a wider intellectual landscape that draws on contemporary debates in historiography, international relations and Presidential studies.

In 2005, photographer Chris Hondros captured a striking image of a young Iraqi girl in the aftermath of the killing of her parents by American soldiers. The shot stunned the world and has since become iconic—comparable to the infamous photo by Nick Ut of a Vietnamese girl running from a napalm attack. Both images serve as microcosms for their respective conflicts. Afterimages looks at the work of war photographers like Hondros and Ut to understand how photojournalism interacts with the American worldview.
This year, the Obama administration has requested Congress allocated $37.9 billion to foreign assistance funding. Even though the final appropriation could differ significantly from the requested amount, the majority of it is set to go to governments in the Middle East. The president requested the largest amount for Israel, $3.1 billion. According to the U.S. government, this funding is distributed for strategic, economic and moral reasons and especially to support global peace, security, and development efforts, as well as providing humanitarian relief during times of crisis.
